CALVIN HARRIS X RAG'N'BONE MAN - "LOVERS IN A PAST LIFE"
youtube
So 2000 and late...
[4.07]
Wayne Weizhen Zhang: [A deep][trance][scorcher] about [old love] by [Calvin Harris] & [Rag'n'Bone Man][!] [6]
Will Adams: Disappointment! After last year's fantastic duo of singles that breathed life into the trance revival, Calvin Harris slips back into Euro-filler, where the only notable features are a marble-mouthed vocalist and a way-too-loud guitar riff. [4]
TA Inskeep: Calvin Harris, ever the musical unoriginalist, sounds as if he's interpolating the likes of Darude here -- because if there's anything Harris knows, it's what's hot in dance/pop at this moment, and right now that's retro '90s dance and trance-pop. The oontz-oontz is pleasant enough, and Rag'n'Bone Man's overdone vocal "ache" fits it well. Neither terrible nor great, just as one would expect. [4]
Alfred Soto: It has the anonymity of a dozen Eurohouse tracks that Miami played around the clock 30 years ago: I can hear Real McCoy's "Another Night" in its verses. What I didn't expect was a guitar solo with "My Sweet Lord" in its rear view. [5]
Hannah Jocelyn: Why did Calvin Harris stick a rag (possibly also a bone) in his vocalist's mouth before recording? The guitar sounds more human than he does! [3]
Nortey Dowuona: Rag'n'Bone Man's lush and rough voice works for EDM since it's just smooth enough not to clash with drum programming. It feels light, excitable and lively when freed of the obligation to imitate R&B and blues -- both genres he clearly wishes to be a part of, yet lacks the finesse or power to. Here, he lives out his fantasies of being Teddy Pendergrass. His voice is too raspy and phlegmy to hold during the verses, but once the pre-chorus synths take hold, he soars, ebullient and lithe as the guitar line over the slimmed-down 1986 pop drums. By the end, he is absent because he's served his purpose. [4]
Dave Moore: The vocals set my teeth on edge: wannabe journeyman pap, like Blues Traveler with all the wrinkles ironed out. I might have found the wallpaper pop-house backing from Harris to be a reprieve, but instead it's just a tepid bath for Rag'n'Bone Man to soak in. You couldn't get me in an unplugged hot tub with either of these guys. [3]
Brad Shoup: On "Giant," Harris redirected Rag'n'Bone Man's gale-force soul through the doors of the Wigan Casino. There was also a hint of boogie, which "Lovers in a Past Life" broadens. I love how this is hectic but not urgent: wrapping itself around the bullcrap until it's drilled a hole in the floor. When Harris drops the twangy hook, it's three docks before Balearic: lovely and gauche, like a restaurant's wall-length photo transfer of a sunset. [7]
Katherine St. Asaph: "Miracle" : Y2K :: "Lovers in a Past Life" : the Y2K club that probably exists in deleted footage from The Beast. (To be fair to this song, I would be more OK with being Rag'n'Bone Man's lover in a past life than that of the guy from The Beast.) [3]
Taylor Alatorre: Just as I was readying a wisecrack about the repackaging of Eastern spiritualism to suit Western categories of romance, I take another listen and realize the song isn't even that: "we were lovers in a past life, for all we know." How do you take a title that hints at reincarnation and cosmically linked fates, and reduce it to a shouted pick-up line at the club? Analyzing EDM lyrics is the province of fools and YouTube essayists, but Rag'n'Bone Man is credited as a co-lead, and his voice is launched at us in the first second, ironically while slurring the word "patience." If there ever were a stage name that implied a commitment to the bit, you'd think it would be "Rag'n'Bone Man," but here he is unwilling to give full expression to the fantasy contained in the premise. His misaimed realism leaves us with little to chew on but Calvin Harris' ongoing Eurodance fixation, which is more subdued and weary-sounding here than it was on "Miracle." That one was turn-of-the-century nostalgia in the service of untrammeled exuberance; this is just another day in the Logic Pro mines. [4]
Ian Mathers: So anodyne and pro forma that I've played it about 5x more than the other songs today because I keep forgetting what it sounds like. Would not care (or even notice?) if it was playing on the radio or whatever, and cannot even vaguely imagine getting it stuck in my head, let alone seeking it out. [4]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Something about this (maybe Andrew Watt's slide guitar solo?) makes me feel actually literally ill. If I heard this in the club I think I would die on the spot. [0]
Isabel Cole: Rag’n’Bone Man does a good job at something I’m not particularly into (soulful warbling), and Calvin Harris does an adequate job at something I’m easily suckered by (a perfectly passable beat occasionally punctuated by, e.g., swooshy laser noises or handclaps), so I guess this is… fine? [6]
Daniel Monteshenko: Rag'n'Bone Man has a powerful bleat that's all grit, and I've never believed a single lyric he's yowled. The streak continues here. "We were lovers in a past life," he pushes on the chorus, but there's no history, no mangled emotion, no wide-eyed wonder of what romance brings. They're just things he's saying. Calvin Harris is 6'5" and cruising through life. [4]

Mou5EmO is back with a one-of-a-kind  piece of music titled "Lonely Drive" (Featuring Mou5ZyZZ)
May 2023 - Mou5EmO is an artist with a focus on creating music that sets the bar higher in terms of genre variety and compositional creativity. The pulsating beats and hypnotic rhythms will undoubtedly transport the audience to another world, where people can lose themselves in the music and dance the night away. This song has a distinctive psychedelic quality, with trippy sound effects and swirling synths that add to the otherworldly atmosphere, perfectly resembling the mood of driving alone, perhaps at night, with nothing but the road, the faraway lights of the city, and the music blasting out of the speakers.
"Lonely Drive" is energetic and uplifting, but there is still a very immersive, very ethereal side to the arrangement. The sound of this track is characterized by its fast tempo and driving bass line. In addition to the driving beat, the song offers soaring melodies and ethereal pads that add so much texture and atmosphere to contrast the speed and intensity of the groove. The pulsing bassline and intricate percussion create a very strong yet surprisingly mesmerizing groove.
The big sawtooth-style synth leads, in particular, soar through the instruments beautifully, establishing themselves as the leading component in the mix bit without overpowering the rest of the song. At the same time, the instrumental is also very balanced, showcasing some incredibly dynamic parts and a melodic backdrop that really adds more ambiance and personality to this track overall. The composition consists of many layers of electronic sounds and captivating melodies that are strikingly cinematic. This makes for a very rich and dynamic sonic landscape.
There's something undeniably liberating about taking a solo drive. The open road spreads out ahead of you, offering a sense of freedom and possibility that's hard to find anywhere else. As you leave your worries behind and hit the gas, it's like shedding the weight of the world and embracing the present moment. Of course, driving alone isn't just a physical act - it's also a powerful metaphor for leaving behind the things that hold us back. Whether it's a toxic relationship, a dead-end job, or just the weight of our own anxieties, sometimes we need to step away from it all and just breathe. This powerful song actually captures the feeling of absolute perfection! "Lonely Drive" will hopefully leave the audience feeling inspired and invigorated because it packs so much punch and a lot of fantastic energy.
To add to that, the collaboration with Mou5ZyZZ is also really spot-on, as it actually feels like a perfect match with the overall mood of this track. In addition, there is something mysterious at play here, as Mou5ZyZZ might or might not be Mou5EmO's trance alter-ego! Maintaining two different musical identities can be overwhelming: When you have a musical alter ego, it means that you have two different musical identities to uphold, so the idea of creating a collaboration with the alter-ego project is nothing short of genius! It really shows all the hard work, dedication, and talent that drives the artist's endeavors. "Lonely Drive" is indeed an amazing example of everything will fall into place when artists like Mou5EmO (and his Mou5ZyZZ) alter-ego put complete trust in the creative process of the production and simply let the music flow out of the soul tap in a very spontaneous and creative way.
In conclusion, "Lonely Drive" is a truly outstanding piece of music that should definitely be right up your alley if you do enjoy the work of artists such as Ghost Rider, Ranjii, and Astrix, only to mention a few. This track is really all about creating a high-energy and immersive experience for the listener. Whether you're dancing at a music festival or just listening at home, this "Lonely Drive" is going to take you on a journey you'll never forget!
Find out more about Mou5EmO, and do not miss out on "Lonely Drive." This release is now available on Spotify and many of the best digital music streaming services.

We also had the chance to catch up with the artist for a full-on interview! Keep reading to learn more!
I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and organic. Does the melody come first? Answer: YES! THE MELODY USUALLY COMES FIRST WHEN I START TO CREATE A NEW SOUND. I HEAR THE SOUNDS IN MY MIND FIRST. THEN I START TO LAY OUT INSTRUMENTS AND BUILD MY TRACKS IN MY STUDIOS. Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio? Answer: I PERFORM LIVE WHENEVER A CLUB OR FESTIVAL HIRES ME. I LOVE PLAYING LIVE HONESTLY. ITS ONE OF THE BEST NATURAL HIGHS BEING ON STAGE PERFORMING FOR FANS. If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression,” which would it be and why? Answer: I LOVE "🎵 Mou5EmO & Mou5ZyZZ - DOCTOR" BECAUSE OF ITS MELODIC SOUND AND VIBE. "WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE HAPPY". What does it take to be “innovative” in music? Answer: HAVING AN OPEN MIND TO FORSURE. I HAVE "ADHD" SO MY MIND IS ALWAYS CREATING VERY INTRICATE SOUNDS AND IDEAS, WITH MULTIPLE LAYERS. Do you have any upcoming release or tour coming up? Answer: I AM NOT CURRENTLY TOURING, BUT I GET SMALL GIGS EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, LIKE "UNGROUNDED SHOWS". ALSO NEW MUSIC ALWAYS COMING AND MY NEXT TRACK WILL BE "🎵 Mou5EmO & Mou5ZyZZ- TAKE ME OR LEAVE ME". What is the best way for fans to connect with you online? My musical Top 10's of 2003
My musical Top 10's of 2003. Yes I did make it out last night.  More on that later perhaps. Did not make it to CC, had a rather low-key evening, but certainly a VERY FUN evening nonetheless. As expected here is my Top 10 CD lists of 2003.  Enjoy
Top 10 CD’s – Full lengths
1. This Morn Omnia - Le Serpent Blanc / Le Serpent Rouge A stunning follow up to  ''7 years of Famine''.  Ant-Zen presents the first part of This Morn 'Omnia's ''Nyan'' trilogy. This disc just floored me with it’s combination of hard techno, four-to-the-floor rhythms, ritual-tribal percussion and breaks, overwhelmed by voice samples. This music is powerful and aggressive, but not overtly nihilistic.  Something you can put on at anytime and instantly fall into the addicting rhythms and song structure.  Disc 2 ''Le Serpent Rouge'' focuses more on the ritual-influenced side centered around the themes of the Zodiac. The music comes off much quieter and more introspective but never calm or soft –more like dark-ambient. CD artwork is phenomenal as well holding some beautiful images shot by (my friend) Alan McClelland of Se7en e-zine http://www.nezzwerk.com/seven/.  Musically diverse, comparable to no other bands out there really.  I hear new elements each time I listen to it.  Easily made #1 for the year.
2. [SITD] – Stronghold Shadows In The Dark seemed to have come out of relative obscurity (save for a compilation appearance on Septic II in 2001) to shoot straight to the top of the elektro genre and straight onto dance floors worldwide!!!  The German duo took the formulas of harsh ebm, futurepop, trance and more, then created their own unique signature on it all.   ''Stronghold'' makes for a fascinating soundtrack of enormous versatility and variety - mixing apocalyptic electro with underground anthems. Tracks like ''Hurt, “Snuff Machinery'', ''Venom'' or ''Rose-Coloured Skies'' have altered and forever changed the blueprint for other acts to follow! Add to [SITD]’s credit the fact that they can write a killer instrumental as the title track ''Stronghold'' (a chilling conclusion to a perfect CD), firmly illustrates and no elektro fanatic should be without this CD.
3. Warp Brothers – Warp Factor Another dynamic German duo who released their CD “Warp Factor” in March of 2003.  Early on in the year, but still mighty memorable. Big Beat meets Trance – yet it should appeal to elektro-industrial fans as well as there’s some serious OOntz included.  Every single beat HARSH and punishing!!!  Every synth, every bassline, every arp-line, everything effected and mangled to a jaw dropping end product that’s instantly addicitve.
4. Seize - The Other Side Of Your Mind Ltd 2CD This UK based bands CD “Lunacy” – released on their own label, effectively caught my attention in 2000.  Preparing their new release Seize also caught the attention of Alfa-Matrix who (with all label releases) issued a Limited edition version of ''The Other Side Of Your Mind'' album ( in a DVD sized box ). Included are the normal CD version, postcards, stickers, and a full length BONUS CD album featuring exclusive tracks.  Their new album reveals a much more mature, up-tempo and club orientated sound, rich with lush modern EBM synths, top rate production and soaring female vocals.  This CD DEMANDS the listeners attention and fans of elektro, futurepop, trance, synthpop, and 80’s influenced euro-dance will quickly get into what is offered across both disc.  And definantly get the limited edition because the bonus remixes from the likes of Implant, Delobbo, Colony 5, Neikka RPM and more are NOT TO BE MISSED!  Completely  captivating with the potential to reach just about every electronic music market (save for the hopeless goth scene) , Seize could also have the potential to crossover into more mainstream markets as well, there just that good and that appealing.
5. Suicide Commando - Axis Of Evil Always knew Johan Van Roy had it in him.  A full-on killer release was inevitable – “Hellraiser” was just a teaser for what was to come.  ''Axis Of Evil'' has been three years in the making and offers 10 tracks of vintage, classic dancefloor assaults that deliver the most grueling of all SC releases, mixing thunderous electro expressions infused with harsh vocals and punishing beats!   I Totally missed out on the limited edition version (which included a DVD) but listeners still need to get their hands on whatever version of this they can.  Sincerely raw, brutal, minimal, and caustic programming.  Johan Van Roy makes great angry music.
6. Glis - Balance Limited Box I found myself constantly listening to this throughout the year.  Diverse, superb, full of emotion, great programming, great production, decent lyrical content , … it’s hard to find any flaws in this disc whatsoever. The limited edition contains exclusive postcards, a poster, and a bonus CD including exclusive remixes.  special guests include Assemblage 23 (additional vocal production & remix), Jennifer Parkin (Ariya), Dominique (Neikka RPM) as well as featured remixes from Delobbo, Implant, Z Prochek and more.   Glis’ music is instantly infectious taking on varied influences that even include IDM and noize, which propels the project beyond JUST the all-to-common sounds of the ebm and future pop genres. Glis provides something more advanced in its quest to explore new territory yet still remains modern sounding enough to hang with the big names like Covenant, A23 and the like.  Glis had a phenomenal year in 2003 with a Euro tour as well as a US tour.  Oh yeah if you didn’t get enough of Glis in 03, well Shaun also contributed music and production duties to Ariya as well.
7. Lights Of Euphoria - Krieg Gegen Die Maschinen Ltd CD The single “True Life” certainly was an attention-getter, marking a return for Lights of Euphoria.  Torben Schmidt is a musician that has immersed himself deeply within the electronic scene from so many angles that he has boundless directions in which to pursue.  The LIMITED TO 1000 COPIES ONLY edition of the new album features 18 TRACKS ! ( 13 songs from the regular album and 5 BONUS TRACKS). Whats interesting about this release is it collects some songs from a varying range of time in the Lights of Euphoria discography, for example “Show me your Tears (Apoptygma Berzerk vs. Industrialheads RMX)” was released 7 cd’s ago on “Beyond Subconsciousness”.  Theirs also Torbens remix of God Module’s “Dyskonnect” included. Odd as these song inclusions may seem,  listening to the CD from beginning to end still makes for a very cohesive whole.  Songs show a variety of influence from straight-ahead nearly simplistic EBM to more intricate future pop stylings.  Also included is the song ''Consequence ( Face Yourself )'' featuring the vocal contributions of Ronan Harris from VNV Nation.  A great CD of varied ideas, tempos and moods making for essential listening.
8. T.O.Y. - White Lights limited edition Always distinctive and unique, they’ve really nailed the whole electro-synth-pop genre and can produce quality results on every release.  They’ve done it again on “White Lights” which includes a bonus cd containing remixes for such bands as In Strict Confidence, 18 Summers (ex Silke Bishoff) and !Bang Elektronika. Also Steffen Keth (DE/VISION) contributed guest vocals for the song "The sky is the limit".  And yeah getting to meet and hang out with Oliver Taranczewski in Detroit this year doesn’t sway my opinion one bit (yeahhhhhh right J )
9  Re.Work - Coma Almost a casualty of the defunct Bloodline label, I was left to wonder if Germany’s Re:Work was ever to release a follow up to their stunning 2001 debut ''Impulse''. There was tours, remix work (Decoded Feedback, Noisex, etc… ) and then finally the eagerly awaited second album ''Coma'' released on the German Scanner label (who also signed Stromkern early on). Moving further away from the Funker Vogt comparisons (the band was discovered by Funker Vogt) the album focuses more on constructing VERY memorable songs that are both melodic and dance orientated with an edge.
10  Negative Format - Cipher Method Where elektro-ebm-trance merge into one -  ''Cipher Method'' brings back the cyber element that bands like Clock Dva, Lassigue Bendthaus, and Electro Assassin explored.  Negative Format continues to push the boundries on every release.  “Cipher Method” will work on the more adventurous dancefloors offering more complex beat and rhythm structures,  dark atmospheric overtones, and a mixture of vocoded and effected vocal passages.   Also great just to sit and listen to as a  further exploration into sound. For body and mind!

VOCALOID LEGENDS - 2013 Part 5
Warning - Extremely Long. I'll try to limit myself to three-ish lines.
#152 - THE WORLDS (M.S.S Project) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 13-10-08, Upload Date: 13-01-18
M.S.S. Project is known for playing Minecraft, but they are more of a music group, and it shows in this opening theme to their gameplay videos. Three of their songs are in this list, so I will tell their story in these parts. But the song is not that bad.
#153 - glow (keeno) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 13-10-20, Upload Date: 10-06-28
There’s a lot of arrangements, but the base song is good. Keeno’s iconic soft tuning of Miku makes the agonizing lyrics that more painful and the song is simple but well-established enough that you can hear the different arrangements.
#154 - Moon-Viewing Recital (Jin) [IA]
Achievement Date: 13-10-22, Upload Date: 13-07-02
About the boy who lost faith and a girl who wants to bring it back. I think it’s better of the idol songs in Kagerou Project, and mainly due to the more relatable lyrics and better instrumentation. Jin’s IA is still too quiet to sell the idol image, however.
#155 - paranoia (Tsunamaru) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 13-10-29, Upload Date: 12-03-13
The quiet neo-classical trance makes the song have this mystic quality, which I really like. Kind of an underrated classic in this list. I’ll keep the review short here.
#156 - Your Diva (azuma) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 13-11-01, Upload Date: 07-09-18
We return to ‘Miku introduction’ songs with one of the oldest songs on this list. Nothing home to write about and I don’t even know if the producer still works… fun fact - the song was used as an ending to a NHK show about the internet. Fitting.
#157 - Crazy ∞ nighT (HitoshizukuP, Yama)
[MEIKO, KAITO, Miku, Rin, Len, Luka, Gakupo, GUMI]
Achievement Date: 13-11-12, Upload Date: 12-07-18
Second of the nighT series. A bit fuller and happy than the original. Kind of the reversal of the original but with a twist in the end. It’s not better or worse, just a variation.
#158 - Outer Science (Jin) [IA]
Achievement Date: 13-11-17, Upload Date: 13-08-31
The ending of the Kagerou Project, or least the bad end. As it stands, the song leans towards dark and synth-heavy. IA finally sings a bit here, showing a bit of a loud and high soaring tone that she would be more famous for later down the line.
#159 - What Do You Mean?! (KuchibashiP) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 13-11-28, Upload Date: 11-01-13
Kuchibashi-P is one of those one-hit wonder producers, but you know there is always that ‘second hit’ for these people, and this ‘soon-to-be-copied-as-Turing-Love’ song is that for him. Some say it was a well-made MMD that did it and… I guess so.
#160 - Envy Cat Walk (Tohma) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 13-11-28, Upload Date: 11-10-22
I think Tohma is an odd one out of all the major producers of the era, but this song is the most well-known from him. While Tohma’s song has no real throughline, the theme is follows as it’s about a prostitute. Mix of English and odd tuning make this stand out.
#161 - Summertime Record (Jin) [IA]
Achievement Date: 13-12-16, Upload Date: 13-09-12
The overall ending theme to the Kagerou Project, and while it isn’t listened to as much as other songs, it is still considered the most well-liked of Kagerou Project. The song that screams summer and probably a good transition to the King of IA.
#162 - Donut Hole (hachi) [GUMI]
Achievement Date: 13-12-25, Upload Date: 13-10-28
As the name suggests, a general song about the emptiness one feels about life, could be just a person or a memory, or could be something grander. Probably Hachi at its most commercial and the transition from Hachi to Kenshi Yonezu.
#163 - Yesterday Evening (Jin) [IA]
Achievement Date: 13-12-27, Upload Date: 13-08-04
The summer festival song set way before the final two songs. Kind of the poppy version of Summertime Record set in a different moment of happiness. Kind of reminiscent of the HoneyWorks songs that would dominate later parts of this list. (But better.)

Album & EP Recommendations
Album of the Week: Grapefruit Season by James Vincent McMorrow
“I’m trying to be less prepared” stated Irish singer-songwriter James Vincent McMorrow this past week at his Rough Trade Nottingham In-Store show. This was mentioned in the context of McMorrow telling the audience of his decision to “wing it” for his first gig back post-COVID lockdown, rather than intensely rehearsing as he would previously. It turns out this new laidback outlook on life has been key to McMorrow coping better with the anxiety he has dealt with his whole life, but also to unlocking the songs that are to be found on his fifth album, Grapefruit Season.
During the Nottingham show to which I was lucky enough to attend, McMorrow made a point to say that this new album, his first in four years, is the one for which he is most proud, as he felt it was him being as open, honest and care-free as possible with his audience of listeners. This is evident almost immediately on second track Gone, which feels like the tone-setter for the rest of the album, centred on a striking refrain of “I give less f*cks than I used to, still give a lot of f*cks.” Discussing the track with Broadway World last year, McMorrow said:
“Gone is about the disintegration of relationships. In my case, the disintegration of my relationship with myself. No song or lyric I’ve ever written has come as close to this one at capturing how I feel about life - how I hear it, my fear of it, my obsession with it, my belligerent belief that I can control it, my quiet acknowledgment in the middle of the night that I will never control a single thing. And there’s nothing wrong with any of it. There’s absolute beauty in embracing the chaos and the decay.”
This freedom and “embracing the chaos” attitude have clearly helped McMorrow to hit a new creative peak, with many of the tracks on this new collection some of the very best he’s written to date. From the soulful guitar grooves of Planes In The Sky, the string-tinged piano ballad Poison To You and the infectious downbeat pop melody of Hollywood & Vine, McMorrow is constantly found in fine form. However, arguably the album’s finest moment comes in the form of Headlights, a gloriously produced, synth-driven track, which also features some wonderful gospel-like vocals and bluesy guitars towards the back end of the track. It’s quite dazzling, much like almost every track here.
James Vincent McMorrow has always been an immensely talented songwriter, but thanks to his moment of personal enlightenment he is sounding better than ever on this latest album. With unfiltered, sincere lyrics and inventive sonic explorations, Grapefruit Season makes for quite the audio journey.

Montero by Lil Nas X
Rapper-singer Lil Nas X seems to cause controversy through simply being unapologetically himself and as a result, his debut album Montero has been one of the most hotly anticipated pop albums of 2021.
Having burst onto the scene with his breakout single Old Town Road, Lil Nas X has since delivered several massive singles in the build-up to this debut, with each one accompanied by a cinematic or visually extravagant music video. The reaction to these by some narrow-minded folk has been that of shock and outrage, with people seemingly appalled and astounded by Nas X’s openness with his own sexuality. Off the back of the bold, tongue-in-cheek video for the title track, some even suggested the singer was actively promoting Satanism through his work. This is all of course nonsense and if they were to listen to his debut album with an open mind, they would find that Lil Nas X is just a pop star that is willing to be refreshingly honest and candid about who he is and what he wants from life.
Both introspective and confessional, Nas X proves across every track on this record that he’s not only capable of writing great pop music, but he’s also not in the least bit afraid of showing his vulnerability to the listener either. This can be seen on recent single Sun Goes Down, where Nas X offers insight to his struggles growing up and fitting in, conflicted by his complexion, his homosexuality, and finding himself lonely and isolated as a result. There are several quite tender moments like this, including the brilliant guitar-driven rock ballad Life After Salem, however they are evenly balanced out with more upbeat moments like horn-backed single Industry Baby. There’s also some pitch-perfect collaborations to be found here with Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Miley Cyrus and, most notably, Elton John, all lending their talents at appropriate moments.
However arguably the strongest moment comes when Nas X dips his toe into some pop punk for the album’s sort-of centrepiece, Lost In The Citadel. With some stylish production, heartfelt lyrics and a killer mix of guitars and synths, it’s just a mightily well-crafted pop song.
Overall, this is a star-making first outing for Nas X, who was already well on his way to global success before this record had even landed. However now he is well on his way and importantly with this debut, he has shown he is not just a flash in the pan but a truly great popstar in the making.

Silence by Alexis Taylor
And finally this week, Hot Chip frontman Alexis Taylor released his quite stunning fourth solo album, Silence, a record that comes from the other end of the spectrum to that of his electronic outfit. Built entirely around Alexis’ soulful vocals, a piano and some well-placed, understated string arrangements, there is no dance to be found here but rather a beautiful collection of ambient ballads.
The pick of these is the title track itself as well as Violence, the latter of which offers one of the most haunting tracks I’ve heard all year. Ending quite unceremoniously with the gentle crashing of the Wollongong Waves, if you need something peaceful and reflective this week then I can’t recommend this album enough.

Tracks of the Week
Let’s Get The Party Started by Tom Morello & Bring Me The Horizon
Kicking off the singles front this week is a rock collaboration of gargantuan proportions as Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine teams up with Sheffield metal behemoths, Bring Me The Horizon. Built on goliath-sized riffs and an anthemic chorus, this one is a straight up rock banger that will have you moshing out in no time.

U&ME by Alt-J
Elsewhere, Leeds-based trio Alt-J marked their return this week with the first single from their upcoming fourth album, The Dream, which is due to drop early next year. My initial thoughts are that this track feels a lot like more of the same, with Joe Newman’s quirky vocals backdropped by some folky harmonies and guitar melodies. It is not a dramatic comeback or shift in style, but fans of their sound will no doubt still enjoy this one.
Listen here
Hall of Mirrors by Let’s Eat Grandma
Also making their comeback this week are the brilliant duo of Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth, otherwise known as Let’s Eat Grandma. Hall of Mirrors is their first new music since their phenomenal 2018 sophomore album I’m All Ears, and sees the duo shift away from their experimental electronica over to the dreamy synth-pop melodies that they first started introducing on that wonderful second album.
Listen here
Godsend by Sundara Karma
Also returning with new music this week are Reading-based indie outfit Sundara Karma, who continue with the pop experimentation they started on last year’s Kill Me EP. With a heartbreaking chorus and some soaring instrumentation, it’s a comeback that’s both immensely moving but also quite triumphant.
Listen here
Earthlings by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis have also announced a new B-Sides & Rarities album this week. Due for release in October, it pulls together all their best lost gems from 2006 to 2020, including this stunning off-cut from Ghosteen that features gentle tribal chanting over some truly transcendent synths.
Listen here
FAKE by Lola Young
Singer-songwriter Lola Young continues to be one of my favourite discoveries of the year so far, with this new single seeing her channel the late-great Amy Winehouse for this soulful and bluesy ballad. If you’ve not heard Lola sing yet, just check this one out and I guarantee you’ll be blown away.
Listen here
I’m Sorry by Josef Salvat
Australian singer-songwriter Josef Salvat also released his brilliant new single I’m Sorry this week, a pulsating synth-driven track with a wonderful neon-glow and 80s-style pop shimmer.

Set You Free by Kyla La Grange
And finally this week, Kyla La Grange made her long-awaited return to the music world, releasing this absolutely amazing and completely unique cover of the N-Trance classic, Set You Free. Also comes accompanied with a typically artistic and colourful video from La Grange, which you should find the time to check out.
